Before there was even a name for these kinds of events, Ray Knight decided to have a cowboy competition in the newly founded community of Raymond. Eventually, he called it a “Stampede.” It was a name he coined himself and has since been borrowed by many similar events. The first seed of our Stampede was held on the first Dominion Day celebration in the new community, July 1, 1902. It was a loosely organized competition of local cowboys doing what they do. 1903 is when the event took the shape that we know today.

By 1903, Raymond was becoming a town and that July the 1st was our coming out party. A grandstand and track were built in the middle of the Town’s park, Victoria Park. A trainload of people came from Lethbridge for the events of the day. The Raymond Stampede hasn’t been held anywhere else since.
